What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is not an immigration program by itself, but an electronic
management system for immigration programs introduced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on 1 January 2015. It is a system that intends to make the immigration process quicker and simpler for
applicants applying for Permanent Residence under the FSWC, CEC, FSTC and some Provincial Nominee programs.
Express Entry does not apply to those who want to immigrate to Quebec.
The permanent residence program under Express Entry is a five-step procedure:
1. An applicant to begin with should qualify under one of the economic programs listed below:
- Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC)
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
- Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC)
Few of the Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are submitted through Express Entry, but applicants must be eligible under one of the three economic programs in order to enter the Express Entry pool.
2. An eligible applicant will create and submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) also called as Express Entry profile. The EOI will be evaluated and issued points using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)
- Eligible applicants are added into the Express Entry pool and ranked against each other. An applicant’s profile remains in the pool for 12 months; however being in the pool does not guarantee an invite.
- Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conducts Express Entry draws regularly (usually biweekly). They select applicants with highest points in the pool and invite them to submit an application for Canadian Permanent Residency. This invite is called Invitation to Apply (ITA).
- If the applicants receives an ITA, they are required to complete and submit their application within 90 days of ITA and if failed to submit the application the ITA is invalidated and the profile returns to the pool.
Provincial Nominee Program
No two provinces in Canada are alike. The PNP programs were designed to address certain economic needs of the respective provinces, except for
Quebec. Most provinces have agreements in place with the Government of Canada that let them to elect and choose immigrants based on their conditions.
There are two types of Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) applications: Express Entry or Non-Express Entry.
